What do you think about the reason in which Abelard was imprisioned? Do you think this reason was justified or what is your opinion? In today's society do you think there is a dictator or authority figure that would imprision someone under the same circumstances in which Abelard was imprisioned? If so what is the name of this person, and why are your reasons behind thinking that, and if not why dont you believe this?
Why you think the author mentioned the fuku after Abelard's wife said that she was pregnant? Even though Abelard was walking on thin ice since his oldest daughter was wanted by Trujillo? Could it have be that the child was the fuku for the family or would there be a different outcome if the mistress was the one that visited him and announced that she was pregnant?
In the story we find out that Yuniors brother died of leukimia. Do you that he tried to replace his brother with Oscar when he started befriending him, reading his stories and helping him excercise etc.? if so , do you think that his reaction to Oscar giving up was out of complete anger or because he felt that he was losing the bond between him and Oscar? was Yuniors reaction a common reaction to friends as well as siblings in today's society?
Abelard is a grandfather who refused to turn his eldest daughter over to Trujilo, a man of great power in the Dominica Republic, for sex. In effect Abelard was tortured because he would not give up his daughter to Trijillo's voracious sexual appetites. Yes, I think that in today's society there is authority figure who is Saddam Hussein's family members frequently sexually assaulted and tortured people when they were in power. No, it is not justifiable, no one should be tortured, and especially for refusing to give over their child for the purposes of sex. Yes, this still happens in the third world, and I think it is wrong.
Eventhough Yunior's brother died I don't believe he was replacing him with Oscar. If anything, Yunior probably wanted to help him out (by living with him) so Lola wouldn't have to go through the same thing (experiancing a siblings death). I also believe that the reason why Yunior started accepting and trying to help Oscar was because he truely felt sorry for him. In a way I guess Yunior felt like he was losing a bond between him and Oscar. To me Yunior got upset sometimes with Oscar but I really think Yunior thought he could be the one to really help Oscar. I think Yunior had a right to get upset and I think he had a normal reaction. Anyone who puts time and effort into a "project" and it is then ruined would get upset.
At first, Yunior could care less about Oscar, he was only looking out for himself. He even said that he needed a place to stay and if it wasn't with Oscar he would basically be homeless. It would also put him on good terms with Lola, since Oscar was "the only thing she loved in the world". I think he did eventually warm up to Oscar and sincerely felt sorry for the him. Eventually, Junior became mad because felt that he was wasting time and crushing his reputation, by even being seen with Oscar. And Oscar could care less about what effort Junior was exerting.
