Why do you think that Boyle and Joxer didn't have jobs? Why did they get offered jobs? Mrs. June Boyle was not fond of Joxer and she made it clear that he was a slacker, why do you think?

Why do you think that Mrs. Boyle questioned Mary for putting 'silks on her legs' during the strike? Why do you think Mary's views about the strike are different than Mrs. Boyles?

Do you think the way that the Captain treated Mrs. Boyle is similar to the way female characters were treated in the Indian stories we read?

Extra credit.
Answering Joely.

I think the Captain and joxer dont have jobs because they are old and they dont really want to get jobs. they procrastinate and avoid oppertunities like the plagues.Well im sure she isnt fond of joxer because he is bad influence on the captain. He agrees with the captain on not working because of his legs. I think the more that joxer is there the more the Captain gives the excuse about his legs.Secondly, Captain and joxer are drinkin buddies, so with him, the captain would never be at work or telling the truth.

I think that they don't have jobs because they don't want them... it's as simple as that. they are using the fact that they are older, weaker, and have bad health as their excuses to "not be able" to have a job. they are offered jobs because of the people they know but still they don't want them. They would rather just hang out with each and drink. I think that Mrs. Boyle doesn't like Joxer because she knows all of this is true and when Joxer is around Boyle is more likely to "rebel" against her, therefore being two against one. When they are together they are even more lazy and pathetic!

answering joely's question...

The reason that the Captain and Joxer did not have jobs was the simple fact that they did not want them. It is apparent that Boyle relied on excuses to justify the fact that he was "unable" to work, which was further fueled by Joxer. They both would rather drink the day away than actually have to earn a honest living. Juno felt that Joxer was truly a bad influence on Boyle, and did more harm than good by bringing the worst out in him.

From the beginning of their conversation it is clear to see that they are from two totally different generations and therefore have to totally different ways of thinking. Mrs. Boyle questioned Mary for an obvious and legitimate reason; if they are going on strike because they feel like they are not getting paid enough, then why wear nice silk stockings to the strike? Mrs. Boyle is implying that Mary is defeating her own point by wearing the clothes like that because it portrays a false image to the factory owners and causes them to think that they are paying the workers enough. Going back to the beginning, they are from two different times and ways of thinking. Mary is very liberal and some what rebellious, someone who is very idealistic. While Mrs. Boyle on the other hand, who understands Mary's point of view to a degree, is more conservative and more of a conformist.
